Is your home unoccupied following major building work?
Most insurance policies for peoples houses will not protect property that is unoccupied. If you are completing major building works on a property and the home is uninsured, you probably need to speak to an insurance broker with some experience of handling renovation property insurance.
Often they will restrict the cover to FLEE on a major project but it is essential you gain the proper protection.
If your home is unoccupied because you are a landlord awaiting tenants, you may also find your cover is restricted..
Thatched Roof Property Risks
Many insurers will simply not insure thatched roofed homes. The fire risk is predominantly the factor that concerns them most.
If you have a thatched roof house, proximity to a fire station and in-home fire precautions can make a difference on whether you can find suitable cover.
As an example, The Guildhall at Higham recently suffered a blaze which firefighters were able to contain to a chimney. Had the fire spread to the thatch then the damage would have been more serious.
